Jan Schwoebel

Software developer and maker. Creator of Filaquote.

I'm Jan Schwoebel, a software developer based in Germany. I build tools for makers and small-batch manufacturing businesses through my studio schlab.de.

I created Filaquote because I kept seeing the same problem in maker communities: small 3D printing businesses losing time and money on inconsistent, manual quoting. Customers email files, wait hours for a response, then go elsewhere. The math for a 3D print is deterministic — weight, print time, material cost, markup — so I built a tool that does the calculation automatically, directly in the customer's browser, the moment they upload a file.

Background

I've been printing FDM parts since the early days of desktop printing. On the software side I've worked across full-stack web development, Shopify app development, and developer tooling. Filaquote is the intersection of those two worlds: an application that understands the geometry of a print, not just the pixels.

What I write about

The guides on this site cover the practical business side of running a 3D printing service: how to calculate what a print actually costs, how to set prices that are fair and profitable, how to choose the right file formats to accept, and how to turn a Shopify store into a self-serve quoting machine. Everything I write is drawn from direct experience building Filaquote and talking to the small printing businesses that use it.
