3D printing cost calculator

Estimate an FDM print with the same geometry, shell, infill and throughput settings that power Filaquote’s Shopify widget. Upload an STL or OBJ to measure its mesh locally, or enter dimensions from a trusted source.

Build your estimate

Upload a mesh or enter its measurements. This estimate runs the same geometry, shell, infill and throughput model as the Filaquote Shopify widget.

STL and OBJ are the only supported formats.

Direct answer

How do you calculate 3D printing cost?

Filaquote estimates a 3D printing price from mesh volume, surface area, height and a material preset. It estimates solid shell volume from surface area and wall thickness, fills the interior at the selected infill, adds a 5% material safety factor, then charges material and the larger of throughput time or the layer-time floor. High surface-to-volume parts receive the configured complexity multiplier. This public tool calls that same model with the visible sample preset; a merchant’s Shopify widget uses its own saved material, machine and margin settings. A slicer remains the authority for production because supports, purge, nozzle and printer profiles are job-specific.

Method

What the model analysis measures

The local analyzer reads triangles from binary or ASCII STL files and polygon faces from OBJ files. It reports mesh dimensions, enclosed volume and surface area. Those three measurements are the inputs the storefront pricing engine needs for shell volume, infill, layer-time floor and complexity.

Same storefront material estimate

weight = [shell volume + (inner volume × infill)] × density × 1.05

This is not a slice. The storefront model makes the same fast, geometry-first estimate a merchant chooses for their shop. Supports, brims, purge, nozzle and profile-specific behaviour require a slicer; verify any production job there before committing to delivery.

Why 3MF and STEP are not estimated here

3MF is a zipped production format that can carry multiple objects and print settings. STEP describes precise CAD surfaces rather than a ready-to-print triangle mesh. This calculator deliberately does not pretend to process either format. Export an STL or OBJ for local mesh measurements, or enter reliable geometry measurements manually. Filaquote's Shopify app supports customer uploads in additional 3D file workflows.

Which Shopify settings shape the estimate?

SettingWhat the widget does with itWhy it matters
Material cost and densityTurn estimated deposited volume into material costEach merchant uses the filament they actually buy
Wall thickness and infillEstimate solid shell and filled interior separatelyA thin 20% print is not a solid block
Volumetric speed and layer floorEstimate machine time from throughput, then protect small/tall parts with a minimum per layerFast volume-only estimates can underprice detailed parts
Complexity multiplierApplies when surface area ÷ volume is at least 4Fine, high-detail parts need more handling
MarginApplies after base material and time costReflects the merchant’s commercial policy

When should you use a slicer instead?

Use a slicer whenever the quote will be sent to a customer. A slicer evaluates your actual process settings and produces the best available time and material estimates. Filaquote’s widget gives Shopify merchants a fast, consistent geometry-first price from their preset; they can enable slicer-priced materials when their process needs that extra precision.
